Selecting a gear

Im gonna be getting a new rear end soon. and im still debating on a gear raito, mabye somone can give me a reccomendation

The car is a 383 -lt4 with a A4 spun by a yank 3500 stall with lockup. I drive it on the street alot more than I do on the track. I have the 230-236 112 LSA right now but im probibly gonna get a custom cam with my headwork next year.

I'm Thinking 3:73s are probibly the best but I haven't ruled out 3:42s yet. what do you guys think.

Even though it's mostly a street car, you can select a gear to optimze at the track and still be good on the street. That's the beauty of an OD tranny. To choose the best strip gear, you need to know your mph in the quarter and your tire size. Use one of the on-line calculators to figure what rear end would give you your estimated mph through the traps just a bit under redline.

I have an Excel spreadsheet I can forward that has the right speed/gear calculations if you want it.

thats really neat. Im glad to see my highway cruising speed would only be 200 rpms higher with 3:73s over 3:23s.
And It says 3:73s at @6000 RPMS w stock tires = 119MPH.
Which is about where I want to be. but my redline will be about 6300 or 6400 ( XE 230/236 ) so I think 3:73s are best.
One question. Am I right in thinking that the RPM at where the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts occur at do not effect this. Because I remember reading that Z9 used 3:23s and ran it up to 7800 to stay in 3rd on his 144mph runs. (it says 6000 RPMs = 138 so that makes sense) but really he would only have to go up to that RPM in third gear since going that high in 2nd would only effect the RPM it drops to when starting 3rd gear. I'm rambling again.....
