Replacing Reverse in my T-56

I have a 96 firebird formula, and i messed up the reverse synchro. (dont ask)

anyway, is it possible to take off the tailshaft housing and replace the synchro without taking the transmission off the car? i have shbox's service manual, i just don't want to drop the tranny.
