Question about working of Solenoid control

I found a cable connector near the PCM. It is the yellow/black one (pin12 / circuit 1223)
description in the manual is as follows:
Function: Transmission 2-3 Shift, Solenoid control
Possible Symptoms From a faulty circuit: Second or Third Gear Only, no TCC apply

What does that mean for driving?
(I dont have any codes, but thinking about soldering those wires properly together again)

Re: Question about working of Solenoid control

sorry for my probably newb-question. didnˋt have many automatic-cars until now
let me ask other way around:
if I disconnect this yellow black wire, what happens? it doesn’t lock up?

Re: Question about working of Solenoid control

I'm no tranny expert, but just looking at the factory service manual.

It will not shift 2->3, and affects 1->2 shifting. You will get code P0758, and the trans will operate in limited gears. Actions taken, per the factory service manual:

- PCM commands 3rd gear only

- PCM commands maximum line pressure

- PCM freezes shift adapts from being updated

- PCM inhibits TCC engagement

Are you attempting to prevent torque converter lockup by disconnecting the wire for the 2-3 shift solenoid?

Re: Question about working of Solenoid control

just trying to figure out why this wire has been cut by one of the preowners. now it is connected again with a simple connector. Iˋm wondering if this has to do something with the slight shudder when shifting into OD at around 45mph. (bad connection?)

those are the connectors, no real insulation in an open engine compartement...

Re: Question about working of Solenoid control

If you don't have any codes for the trans, and it appears to be shifting correctly, someone may have just fixed a broken wire, or one chewed through by a rodent. Was it spliced close to the PCM connector?

According to the description in the factory manual, the PCM uses the 1-2 and 2-3 solenoids in combination to create four different shift conditions. None of them seems to affect the O/D 4th gear. In addition to P0758 which monitors the electrical circuit for the 2-3 solenoid, there is P0756 which measures "2-3 shift solenoid performance". Appears that if the 2-3 solenoid performance is faulty, it will limit the shift patterns to 1-2-2-1 only, or 4-3-3-4 only. In effect, your trans would only be using 2 gears rather than 4.

Unfortunately we don't seem to get many people here to help, so I'm just reading what I can find in the factory manual. We have a trans builder who is a sponsor, but he only seems to come here infrequently, and just to advertise, not to help people. On ltxtech.com, one of the sponsors is CPT, a reputable trans builder specializing in the 4L60E. The owner passed away last year, but his family is continuing with the business, and will generally respond to questions about 4L60E issues. Hate to promote a different site, but this one just isn't very active any more. And, unfortunately, my ability to reply to many of the inquiries is limited to specific areas where I have some "hands on" experience, and an automatic trans is not my forte'. I just have to rely on my training as a mechanical engineer.

If I haven't posted this before, link to free download of 1996 factory service manual, courtesy of GaryDoug. 96 - 97 are virtually identical.

Re: Question about working of Solenoid control

yes, close to the PCM but will see if I can fix this a bit better.
luckily no codes, just this shudder Iˋd like to trace down.

Thanks a lot Fred, as always very valuable information and explanation! I read the manual as well but wasnˋt sure how to interpret this.
yeah itˋs a shame a lot of peoples nowadays are only on facebook and stuff. quality of information there is going down significantly.
