question about shift kits and transmission perform
question about shift kits and transmission perform
I have a 94 firebird formula automatic. I was interested in getting a shift kit for my car. I know my car does have the transmission perform button which gives harder shifts and higher shift points. would there be any conflict having a shift kit and having this transmission perform button?
Thanks
Thanks

well it may not be agreed upon but the best I have found that you could install yourself is the transgo HD2 BUT DONT GO OVER 1 SPACER IN THE ACCUM .
That will give you nice shifts but not so much to break stuff

If you are using the stock torque converter, do not use any spacers at all. I do not use spacers in any of my buildups as I want smooth 1-2 part throttle shifts, even with the 9.5" lockup torque converters.
Trans Go shift kits will dramatically shorten the life of a 4L60E. This has been agreed upon by most GOOD transmission builders for around 10 years now. If you're looking into a shift kit, look at the B&M or Shift Technologies.
Your performance button does nothing but cut voltage to your EPC solenoid, which raises line pressure. Simply raising line pressure isn't the best way to firm up the shifts. An increase in "holding power" or a more rapid apply will help both shift quality and transmission life. If you PM me, I'll give you a parts list that will contain about $50 worth of parts that will provide a better shift and help the transmission live longer, as opposed to destroying it.
We don't need to use any prepackaged shift kits, because we actually undestand how a 4L60E works. I can lay out a parts list of the things you'd need to help shift quality AND transmission life. These are the same parts used in our 9 second transmissions. The diffence between what we do and a TG kit is...Ours actually last for more than a few runs at a time before needing a band and 3-4 clutches.

We dont use the spacer either, however and we don't use the Transgo kit either in any but our level 3 and thats only to utilize the manual 1 hold down feature.
As for spacers in his case I suggested it because though we don't use any we also do a modified version of the kit using only certain parts of it, I have never used the B&M kit for the 4L60E I have used them in the 2004r but wasn't impressed with those but ill perhaps look at one and see. Since people are always asking about a shift kit they can buy to install themselves and I have allways felt the Transgo a bit over complicated for the average non builder home mechanic. Of Course theres no need in our units to add anything . But still I like to be able suggest a good choice to people who do need them in there stock units.
