Question Please help me!!! Can't unbolt bellhousing.

I am swapping my clutch. Pulled tranny just fine. Now - I can't remove bellhousing bolts - absolutely no space. I removed only 2 bolts, there 2 more on the sides and 2 at the top of it. Nothing will fit there. Is there any trick that can help me??? Do I need to lower engine somehow??? Bent something??? Please Help!!! Thank you

I let the engine hang a bit, not completely. I didn't really have a problem with it though. Hardest Part was actually getting the bellhousing off the engine. Let the engine droop a bit, and try it. Should be plenty of space though.

Thanks! I need to tilt/lower engine a little (probably 1-2 inches)... Do I need to undo motor mounts for this? What will be the easiest way?

Put a block of wood under the damper and push up GENTLY, moving the back of the tranny down. No need to do anything to the motor mounts.

Remove your oil pressure sending unit when you do this or it will break when it hits the firewall.
Mine did the first time I let the auto hang to get to the bellhousing bolts.

Thanks. I am not sure about 700r4, mine is T56 and it's 14mm for it.

unbolt the crossmember and it will drop down.the motor mounts will keep it from dropping to far.

Re: Please help me!!! Can't unbolt bellhousing.

I didn't have much time to work on a car today, but here is an update:
Tried slowly pushing dumper up with a wood block and jack to the point, engine stopped tilting and body started moving up. Got 2 more bolts out this way (top bolts). Other 2 bolts on sides (especially driver side) still can't be reached that way
Probably loosening motor mounts allow to tilt engine even more? Or as ss97dml suggested, unbolt crossmember (how many bolts are there - I see 2x18mm ones)? Unfortunately couldn't find 18mm socket today
I am sorry for bothering everyone with so many questions - just working on a clutch first time in my life. Please, let me know what do you think. I really appreciate all your help

I lower the engine as much as it will go and use a 3 foot extension and a u-joint. The top left bolt is the only one thats any problem. I put some masking tape on the u-joint so it won't be so flexable. Makes it easier to get the socket on the bolt but it will still flex.

I let the engine hang, plus I used a baby sledge, a crowbar or whatever to put access dents in the unibody to get the tool in there.

Red face Re: Please help me!!! Can't unbolt bellhousing.

What is the proper way to lower k-member? What bolts should be removed and what loosened? I found completely opposite opinions on this subject. Thanks!!!

I think this thread will not be complete without happy ending Pushing on a dumper + socket with wobble extension = success. Clutch works terrific! Thanks everyone for the help!!!
