P0742....Possible Transmission failure in the Future?

I tried this thread in the drivetrain forum but really didn't get any information except one reply. Just seeing what you guys think may be wrong. Yesterday morning I had this code pop up on me. To kind of give the situation, my battery terminal has been kinda corroded so yesterday morning my car would not start. For instance, I would have full power when I put my key in and turn it to the ON position, but as soon as I try to start my car, there would be a click and the power would completely turn off. I would then go and wiggle my power cable and the power would come back on and I would try to start the motor and the exact same thing would happen. Well, I cleaned off my terminals a little bit and finally got it to start. However, once I started my car, my SES light came on for a P0742. I turned my car off and restarted it and the SES light was off. I tried to see if there were any codes with my scanner but none were present.

This morning I noticed when I started my car, it would first kind of catch and then die. Once I started it again, the motor would slowly rev up to 1k and not go any higher in idle. Usually when I first start my car it will rev to about 1500 rpm and then go back down but not anymore.

I've noticed lately that my transmission has been whining under light and moderate acceleration. Would this code maybe be a sign of tranny failure in the near future? It seemed to drive fine today, it shifted okay and when the converter locked up, there wasn't any slipping. It also unlocked without any problem. There is a slight transmission oil film that is all over my transmission pan. Whats wrong with my baby?!

sounds like you might need a new transmission pan gasket, but if it isnt throwing anymore codes its probably alright. I'd have the gasket and filter changed to see if there is anything in the pan. Metal shavings all over the filter and magnet are a sign that somethings wrong, even before an SES light is set (that was how I caught my problem anyway).

Doesn't look like you're having any more luck on the wrong forum...... moving to Drivetrain, and merging with the initial post.
