it sounds stupid but i bet its your power steering fluid, sounds like the pump is low on fluid and will whine, especially in 1st gear where the rpms will usually climb

I had the same thing, but from the back of the car and through all gears. Turns out some bearings had shattered in the rear. Replaced 'em plus a 3.73 gear set and all is well.

I had a similar sound...towards the front...that would be the torque convertor. Mine just blew up a couple weeks after hearing that. Not to freak you out,...mine was a defective one.....but that sounds just like mine.

HINT: never buy a TCI convertor!!!! Go with a Vig!

If you're referring to PTC as in ProTorque Converters, they're actually one of the best converters made. There is another PTC, which I believe stands for Performance Torque Converters...I'm not sure about their quality.

Mine has a whine under moderate acceleration. I remember before my last tranny got replaced, it used to whine like it is now, and then it went boom. Looks like I may be on my 3rd A4. Anyone have a reccomendation on a good place to look for a built 4L60e?

Rock-On Transmissions in Texas. awesome work, best customer service i've EVER experienced. Solid tranny, night & day difference! Plus, looks like you are in Texas as well, which simplifies things. Even though I'm in California, it was worth it!!

Ask to speak to Dave (his is the 1st # listed), he is the owner. Awesome guy!

I could not be happier or more impressed with the transmission and their customer service!!!!!

The same thing happens to me, I think my power steering pump is about to go out though.

P0742....Transmission failure in the near future?

This morning I had this code pop up on me. To kind of give the situation, my battery terminal has been kinda corroded so this morning my car would not start. For instance, I would have full power when I put my key in and turn it to the ON position, but as soon as I try to start my car, there would be a click and the power would completely turn off. I would then go and wiggle my power cable and the power would come back on and I would try to start the motor and the exact same thing would happen. Well, I cleaned off my terminals a little bit and finally got it to start. However, once I started my car, my SES light came on for a P0742 . I turned my car off and restarted it and the SES light was off. I tried to see if there were any codes with my scanner but none were present.

I've noticed lately that my transmission has been whining under light and moderate acceleration. Would this code maybe be a sign of tranny failure in the near future? It seemed to drive fine today, it shifted okay and when the converter locked up, there wasn't any slipping. It also unlocked without any problem. Whats wrong with my baby?!

Re: P0742....Transmission failure in the near future?

I can't really help, but I do find it kind of strange that my car also does the exact same thing when I start it. Not only that but my tranny DID fail.
