Re: need some advice

What do you plan to do with the car the most?
If mainly on the street with some track duty I'd say around a 2800-3200 stall. If more track duty than normal I'd say 3200-3600. I have a vigilante 3000rpm stall and love it. Cam selection plays a big role in the stall rpm you choose. I'd determine exactly what cam you want, then choose a stall that best suites that cam and your driving needs/habbits.

you have to remember your vig 3000 is not really a 3000. Vig is notorious for underrating their converters. mine is supposedly a 3200...in reality the stall is every bit of 3800 rpm. streetability is still very good though.

just thought i'd point that out.

Re: need some advice

Yes definately stay away from the SLP. Right now there are only 3 converters out on the market where I've heard or experienced nothing but rave reviews over. PI vigilante,Yank, and have been hearing a lot about Edge lately. The first two are proven reliable performers, the last I've heard nothing but great things about but haven't had any first hand experience with. Your gonna want to spend the money for a good quality unit on this one. It's that probably overused saying "you get what you pay for" in this situation.

Oh on the underrating of the vigilante. I've never heard that, but that doesn't mean it isn't true. My 3000rpm is right about where it should be for the stall rpm. The more power the car makes though the higher it will stall the converter. Your probably just making a lot more power than me.

Re: need some advice

As a professional transmission builder, I've had experiences with many different converter manufactuerers. PI (Vigilante) is a great converter, and so is ProTorque. My shop is a distributor for ProTorque, and I can tell you I've had nothing buy great luck with everything I've got from them. As a matter of fact, my personal '93 Z has a 9.5" 3800 stall ProTorque in it, and I love it.

You can access ProTorques web page through a link in my web page in my sig. Click on the ProTorque banner from my page, and it'll bring up their web site. My site also has a price list for their popular 700/60E converters. Click on "converter pricing" to get to it.

As for the transmission cooller? Look for either "Long", Tru-Cool", or "B&M". "Long" makes the coolers for all 3 companies, so the coolers are identical. The pricing varies with the brand it's sold under. You'll want a "stacked plate" cooler, and not a "tube and fin" cooler. SP coolers are much more efficient, and cool better. You can identify a SP coller because it looks like a miniature radiator. A tube and fin cooler looks just like it sounds...a piece of tubing bent in 180* bends and ran through a series of fins. I've seen fluid come out of these coolers HOTTER than when it went in them.
