Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
Helper Removed Shifter from M6 and ended up with 3 springs and 2 bushings on ground under car. Any help on their placement? Schematic anyone? Did I find all of the parts? See pic
Car is '97 Camaro SS M6 with optional Hurst shifter. I will need to know how this goes back together as soon as I find out from Spec why a Stage 2 clutch disc failed. Splined hub separated internally from outer disk.

Re: Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
See if the diagram at the end of this manual helps. It's for the aftermarket Hurst Comp+, but the spring info may be applicable. Appears you should have two large diameter springs, and two smaller diameter springs that fit inside the larger springs, and are removable to adjust the "centering" tension on the stick.

You don't take the top cover plate off to remove the shifter from the trans.

Re: Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
Now you tell me about not needing to remove the whole t'ing! Now I know why it would not budge. It was the sealant.
Fred- Thanks for the Hurst instructions and yes that helps explain some of it. However...
The problem now is that I don't know if I have all of the parts. Did it have an inner and outer spring on one side and just an outer on the other as a form of adjustment? Or did I lose one of the inner springs and bushing/shim down inside the trans?
This is not a good scenario. How will I know.....???

Re: Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
The question is "how much difference will it make"? Put it together best you can, see how it works, and if you feel there is a problem with the unbalanced springs, try removing the "inner" from the one side. If that's too loose (or whatever change if makes), look for an equivalent inner spring.
Note also that Hurst will "rebuild" their shifters, and you could ask if they will sell you the parts, or provide a diagram of how the unit is assembled.

Re: Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
The trial and error method sounds fine now that I know the basics.
However I don't want to put it back in the car without knowing if their are any missing parts and if they could have fallen inside the transmission. And how would I get them out if they did? I guess I could tip the trans up on end and see if anything appears?

Re: Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
Hard call. I've never actually taken the shifter apart on a T56. I've removed aftermarket Hursts, SS Hurst, Pro5.0's, stock shifter, and replaced them many times, but just unbolted the shifter from the trans, which is all that's required.
Can you look through the top of the shifter block in the photo and see into the shifter chamber in the trans? Are the openings in the shifter block large enough to allow the spring to fall through?

Re: Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
I took an OEM hurst apart a while ago.
on the drivers side there's a .480 o.d. spring
.872 long
.064 wire
6.75 coils
on the passenger side it's about the same spring plus a smaller .302 o.d. spring inside that with
.924 length
.043 wire
on top of each spring stack side is a .481 round .042 thick steel shim.

Re: Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
Thanks for the help with this! Now I can focus on the reason for the disassembly...A NEW CLUTCH!
I don't know what possessed you JMD to inventory these parts and their location but I thank you for that!

Re: Need Help with Hurst Shifter Springs
I don't remember; I measured them 2007 or before and posted those numbers on tech in 2009.
I probably wanted to see if the centering bias of the springs could be shimmed or otherwise changed.
