M6 terminology question

While at CarX getting a brake job done on my Z28, i also asked them to check-out some gear lub collecting around the exterior axle housing where it's attached to the differential housing (like a leaky seal) i had noticed, and asked for a quote for repairs.

My question is my Z28's RPO code is GU5; but the technician was explaining what he noticed, he wispered to his manager, "[I]It's an M-6"[/I
The RPO Code GU5 stands for the 3.23 gear ratio, but what is the definition of M-6,... is M-6 just another name for GU5? Is the M-6 the entire rear including axles and axle housing or what?
Just curious?

M6=6 speed manual
A4=4 speed automatic

I think all the m6's came with a 3.42 rear gear but I could be wrong. Someone else here should know.

Yes all 1994-2002 M6 equipped F-bodies came with 3.42's
The `93's have 2 different M6 trans's one for 2.73's and one for 3.23's

The GUx refers to the rear axle ratio. And the RPO for the 3.42 gears is GU6. If you have GU5 (and the car is totally stock, as indicated in the link in your signature), you most likely have an A4, not an M6. Wouldn't hurt to put that info in your signature.

I'm thinking of including my entire RPO sticker along with my sig.
Seems i can hardly ever get a straight answer to, a simple question (most responses seem to refer to something other people post in thier responses and have nothing to do with my questions.

I guess i should only ask questions i have the answer to already.
Or never ask a question for which the answer is not totally essential.

Including the trans type is your sig is a most basic thing that people do. It avoids all this confusion.
If your car came stock with GU5 gears, it's an auto (ie. 4L60E, A4), unless someone did a trans swap (and no one would ever know that without you telling them what trans you have).
People are trying to help, if you would drop the attitude and let them.

Now I've heard everything. You are asking about a GU5 rear (used only with the A4), and do not even seem to know what an M6 is (although you mechanic indicated you have one). Two totally contradictory pieces of data. Gu5 and M6 do not coexist in the stock world of the F-Body (except 93 - ooooppps.... extraneous data - shame on me).

Having the tranny type in your signature would have resolved the issue, and allowed someone (anyone with the most basic info) to answer your question with one sentence. Instead, people are fumbling around, guessing what your tranny is, etc. To suggest that asking that you include this basic info "refer(s) to something other people post in thier responses and have nothing to do with my questions." is just plain stupid.

As a moderator I TRY TO HELP PEOPLE GET THEIR QUESTIONS ANSWERED. Often, I see people who are not getting their questions answered, because they simply have not provided enough info about their car. The very easy way to get answers quick, and to the point, is to have a "SIGNATURE" - year, model, engine, tranny and any major mods. I suggest this EVERY time I see someone having a problem getting an answer, and missing this vital info in their post. No one ever complains...... until today.

You are the first person in 11 d@mn years to bitch because I suggested this. Good luck getting help ANYWHERE with that attitude. You really don't deserve the effort it might take to help you.

Another name to add to the "ignore" list,
