M6 to A4 swap

Alright fellas, I need some help. I am considering swapping out the T56 in my car, for a 4L60. I have tried searching on this topic and haven't found the necessary answers I am looking for. I know to many people this may seem stupid, but to me its a great idea. I am a drag racer at heart, and since I am going to be putting alot of money in the car, i think its a good idea to be super consistant so I can do alittle bracket racing on the weekend. Now, what exactly needs to be done? Do I need to swap out the engine harness for an auto one? I know I will need a new computer tune, thats no problem...what other work is involved. Also, would anybody be interested trading me there good working 4L60 for my T56? There would be some other consideration as well for this. so people help me out here. BTW, it has a hurst shifter, UMI short stick, MBA billet ball, SPEC billet steel flywheel, and SPEC stage 3 clutch, that has about 2,000 miles on it. Trades will be considered.

Re: M6 to A4 swap

If drag racing is your thing then your definately making the right move. Automatics with the right size torque converters are killers at the drag strip. You might also want to try and put a post in the regional section and or parts wanted secion. I can tell you that for every one M6 guy that wants to convert to an auto there are five auto guys that want a M6.

I doubt you'll have too much trouble finding an A4 doner. Just try and get one who all ready has a nice aftermarket torque converter, shift kit and tranny cooler. Might as well save the time and expense of doing it yourself.

Good luck.

And welcome to the dark side of the force

Re: M6 to A4 swap

Hey I'm deep into the same swap right now, Got it all sitting and waiting for tonight, Has taken me 2 months to get everything straight.

If you use the 4L60/700R4(93 f-body) you don't need to mess with the wiring.(VSS, Backup lights, hook up with a little help)

only thing I'm having problem with is the TV cable hook up.
seems the 93 auto has a different Thottle body than all the others.
I'm trying to see if I unhook the curise control and use it for the TV hookup.
but I'm not sure yet.

Only thing I worry about is how much it will hold, the stories are everywhere about these things burning up or blowing up.

If I had more money, I would build a TH350 or TH400, and add ladder bars to the back(removes the Torque Arm) and be done with it.

I just need to get it moving again. I know Brian at pcmforless has a 94 m6 to A4 tune(he was working on it for me) not much to it, raise the idle and such.

oh and don't buy those $75 lockup kits, I can send ya a sheet that you can do your own, for the cost of a relay and some wire.

I got tranny back yesterday from the rebuild, so it will go in tonight.

Re: M6 to A4 swap

I did this swap a few years back. I put in a 700r4 from an old Iroc that i had laying around. def. alot easier then swapping out the harness' to make the elec. versions work. all you need is a 93 tbody (or almost all aftermarket tbody's have the extra stud for this already) if your building for dragracing, just go ahead and get a bigger tbody now instead of buying a 93 stocker only to replace it later. anyways, you'll also need a A4 trans crossmember (only like $40 from dealership new) you'll need to make sure it has the VSS instead of mechanical gears. this is easy to do with the trans out. you can use the reluctor ring from a 4L60E (94-97 atleast)and the speedo sensor itself. it even fits in the 700r4's tailshaft housing. you'll have to also get the speedo cable/tv cable bracket off a 93 Fbody (around $10 dealership item). custom tune (madwolf did mine too)LT1 flexplate, related bolts, stall conv., and you can reuse the driveshaft cause its the same thing. and I agree about just wiring the lockup switch yourself. its ver easy to do and is good for a couple MPH at the track and a few hundred rpm on the highway. and get a stock dipstick/tube. DONT get the lokar dipstick. I put that on a friends car and its too short for the drastic overhang of the 4 gen. its a pain to fill the trans cause the hole's sooo small. ofcourse dont forget a shifter. I used my M6 console and used the boot. it makes it clean and depending on the shifter used, looks like a stick still. mounting the shfiter is the worst part of the swap really.
good luck

Re: M6 to A4 swap

If you can do it on the cheap thats great.
Personally I have spent over a grand on an upgraded 4L60E with converter only to have it lose 3 and 4th 26k later.
I will be spending the next thousand dollars on a TH400 swap.
If your planning on putting some real horsepower down then plan on spending 2k to get a 4L60E-4L60-700R4 to live.
This is just my opinion but I don,t seem to have good luck with the overdrive trannys and I don,t want to spend 2k on a tranny that might or might not last behind the 383 I am building.

Re: M6 to A4 swap

got the tranny done this weekend, found 1 big thing out,

seems the Torque arm mount on the tranny is different from the M6 to the A4

had to get one out of a junk yark, thank god they had a 94 4L60E, it mounted right up after that.

running the cooler lines was a bitch, but didn't take too much longer.

having some issues with the gear lever, but I'm working on it.

Re: M6 to A4 swap

OK, i have done some research. If i was to swap in a 4L60E out of a 94 camaro, could I use the engine harness I have for a 95 Z-28 w/ an A4? Would there be any other modifications I would need to do? I was told it would be best if you used a harness from the same year car....I just need to know if there are any differences.

Re: M6 to A4 swap

94-95 should be the same harness/trans/engine/pcm. should be good to go. you just have to find a good donor harness.

Re: M6 to A4 swap

which reminds me, I might be parting out a 94 TA that has an A4. perfect trans but is orig. around 140K mi.s. completly stock car. how much would the trans, conv., flexplate, pcm, crossmember, shifter/cable,console be worth to ya? ofcourse it'd be plus shipping but I can crate up the trans no problem and ship the rest in a box. Ive just been thinkin today of starting a 4gen racecar project and it occured to me my buddy has the perfect candidate since I can get the car for a couple grand.
let me know.

Re: M6 to A4 swap

Well, right now I have been conversing with a guy that I may be swapping my M6 for his A4, nothing is final yet. I may be interested if this deal falls through, but I am keeping my fingers crossed. I'll let everyone know that has posted or PM'd me with something they were interested in swapping if anyhting happens. Thanks to everyone for the help though. If there is anything I may be missing feel free to let me know. BTW does anybody know of any aftermarket auto shifters for our cars?

Re: M6 to A4 swap

I put in a b&m hammer shifter in mine. looks cool (imho) and works one handed unlike some shifters. dont get one that has the lever for releasing park. just make sure it has the built in neutral safety switch and reverse lights, but you'll need to wire those in yourself to the factory harness. other that that any aftermarket shifter will work as long as its made for an overdrive GM that is.

Re: M6 to A4 swap

Also just as an update finished it Thur, the VSS plug was different on mine, don't know if that is the case for everyone tho.

I found a 93 V6 auto in the junk yard and yanked the plugs for mine.

just have to mount the battery and break it in now.

and I would NOT recommed this swap to anyone,
I have a 4 post lift and a friend that does this all the time.
it still took a full week, to get it done.
