Learning to build a 4l60e
So now I have 3 dead 4l60e sitting here. I would like to learn how to give these things a rebuild. What special tools are needed? Any specific book I should get. I can build motors, rear ends pretty much whatever except I've never opened up a tranny. So someone point me in the right direction.

Not the best one to cut your teeth on...but if you have to I have gotten plenty of good info from here.
think about it long before you tear it down.....just the tools you would need are all $200 a pc. on average
the 60E's have a bunch of small stuff that you need to know to make it last

all i have to say about what you are about to do is take your time, transmissions are finely machined and are very sharp and very delicate. If something won't fit right start taking things apart and double checking your work, "messure 2 cut once" there are numerous tools to use on the 4l60e i can't think of what their called off the top of my head, but go to this site.
Trans Starthere you can get rebuild kits the correct books, and tools.

An ATSG manual is your best bet. You'll need around $400 worth of specialty tools, and parts for a Race prepped 4L60E will run the average guy about $700-$800...If you plan on putting any serious power through it. I'd suggest staying away from some of the "Performance Rebuild Kits" you see advertised. Many of them contain stock style parts.
4L60E's are not a great "beginners" transmission.
Whatever you do, stay away from any Trans-Go products...Especially their vacuum modulator kits for the 60E.
You'll need lip seal tools, bushing driver set, low/reverse spring pack compressor, drum spring pack compressor, dial calipers, pump alignment band, assembly lube, straight snap ring pliers, 90* snap ring pliers, "I" ring pliers, a pick set, torque wrench, and an air compressor with a blow tip.
