Hurst shifter notchy/hard to change gears

I installed a short stick on my OEM shifter. The shifts were shorter an easier but I missed 3rd 4 or 5 times so I replaced it with the OEM Hurst. Now the shifts are more accurate (never missed a gear) but you have to put I lot of effort into shifting. For example, when shifting 1-2 when the car is in motion it feels like once you get halfway down you have to pass though a tight "gate" before you can pull the shifter down the rest of the way. It does this in all the gears. If you're still, sometimes you can hold the clutch in and row throught the gears without feeling any type of obstacle. It make the shifting a lot slower. Whats up? The fluid is new NAPA premium ATF. Should I change to something else better?
