How do you remove the 6spd shifter to add fluid??
Re: How do you remove the 6spd shifter to add fluid??
It is not necessary to remove the shifter. You can add fluid in through the plug on the opposite side of the transmission as the drain plug, then once you've filled enough to fill to the bottom of the filler opening it's full. But if you don't want to crawl under it to fill it, then the shifter is the next spot. I changed my fluid when installing my Hurst. You have to remove the console shift boot, the shift ****, and the center console. Then, on the transmission hump, there's a rubber base/boot on the shifter held in by about 8 or 10 screws. Remove them, then the boot. This leaves a hole exposing the ground outside and the part of your tranny that holds the shifter. It looks like a little box (basically the only thing exposed by removing the boot. Take the bolts out of it, and remove the cover to the box (the shifter is part of this cover) this is inside of your tranny. remove the fill plug from underneath, and when your car is on level ground start pouring. Pour a little at a time so the fluid can circulate through. Pour until fluid starts coming out of the fill hole. should take about 2 quarts. replace the fill hole, put the shifter back in the cup on the arm inside the transmission, replace the cover using some RTV sealant (be sure to scrape away the old gasket first) replace the boot, then the console and you're good.

It is way more work to fill it through the shifter hole.

Why not just go get a $10 pump and pill it the way it is supposed to be filled?

Without some way of getting under the car you are screwed. Even if you fill it through the shifter hole you'll still need to get under the car to remove the fill plug. That is the only way to know when it is full.
There are two plugs in the transmission. A drain and a fill. Removing the plugs requires a 3/8 drive socket wrench. No socket it required, just the square drive end will do it.
It is ok if it is a little over full, but not alot. You could theoretically park the car with 2 wheels on a curb and crawl under it to do the job. It would only be slightly tipped, make sure it is tipped in a direction that makes it a little over full instead of a little under full.
Or, just over fill it and leave the plug out while you drive it to some level ground slowly. The excess fluid will run out, then you can park it back on the curb and replace the plug.
I suppose if you get creative there are several ways to do it.

Just any fluid pump. I got mine for $8.00 at Autozone. It came with some clear hoses. It looks like a large screw in push pump off the top of a soap dispenser. It works very well, I used it just last week to change the fluid in the differential.
