help me pick the right stall speed

after only 12 months and 11K miles i trashed my "hi-po" Combination Motorsports tranny (4l60e)....

i have decided to put a REAL tranny in my car
a transking th400 reverse/manual body with transbreak

the question is what stall speed should i get?

here is my setup LT1 350ci, ported stock heads, all bolt ons, 224/230-112 cam, 3.73 gears. the car weighs 3500lb with me in it.

i had a 2800 vigilante and i felt the stall wasnt high enough, i was only cutting low 1.70 sixty foots on motor. now that i will be spraying a 150 shot will that change which convertor i need?

i was thinking a 3500 is that too high for setup w/n2o?
or should i just get a 3000?

thanks

If you are optimizing the combo for the strip, 3500+ would be my recommendation. But you may find a stall that high quite annnoying on the street. Keep in mind that it will not be a lockup converter, so the revs will be pretty high anytime it's under much load.

I've read that too high of a stall converter isn't good to use with nitrous, but a 3500 should be okay. If you were running NA, then you can go higher I think.

yes rich im trying to optimize the car for the strip, my 2800 stall was barely noticeable during normal driving, but that was a lock up convertor.

im going to go with the 3500

the car sees limited street use maybe 5000 miles a year, most would not consider it streetable now, i have no power steering with stock tires, the entire hvac system is gone, all firewall padding and carpet padding is gone, and the car has mostly sperical rod ends in the suspension. it rides pretty rough, but that is how a muscle car is supposed to be, in my book anyway.

another question, what gear set should i get with the new th400?
and how hard will this new tranny shift?
any recommendations on shifters besides the $300 cheetah?

thanks

Hey Jesse! Long time no talk. No advice for you, just a TTT. We never did get any racing in this year. Next season we will have to get some plans for me to visit or you to come up here again Cheers!

I like the B&M "Pro Ratchet" shifter. The gear choice will depend on your redline/power peak, tire size, and expected trap speeds.

Re: help me pick the right stall speed

3500 would be good on the spray.

Capn- yes on spray, you have to keep the stall speed in a sensible range or the hit of the nitrous will blow right through the converter, raise the stall speed and run you out of gear before you even make the 1/4 mile.

personally, i drive a 3800 stall on the street. granted it's a lockup converter, but the actual slipping of the converter during acceleration isn't as bad as you might think. it's not like driving a stocker, but you get used to it. if you don't depend on your car as a driver or plan to cruise down the highway at 70+ mph, then a 3500 won't be unstreetable for your purposes.

Re: help me pick the right stall speed

with 3.42 gears my Yank 4200 LOVED being on the bottle. the rpms just stay pegged at 5000rpm+ whenever its floored. makes for a hellacious highway killer, and with lockup, i can drive it anywhere.

but i have a JW 3800 stall ordered for it since they yank took a crap.
