I dont see why not. But I am kind of confused as to why or what the heck you are talking about.

How will you prevent the heat from warping the axle tube and causing misalignment?

The tube-to-center-section connection is not the weak point. Its the small ring gear diameter.

FWIW, that is exactly what a shop did in this magazine article.

And when then got all done, they had spent $1,700 and ended up with a rear axle that was good for 425rwHP on an automatic, and not recommended for a manual trans.

Part 2 of the article should be posted as well.

Decide what you want to do with your Pontiac, and then make an informed decision on whether the 10-bolt can survive with your driving interests and style. For drag racing applications pushing up to 425 rwhp with an automatic transmission, the 10-bolt might perform great, whereas an identically equipped six-speed might not fare as well. If you intend to drag race on a regular basis, seriously consider a 12-bolt. For Birds looking to run 8s and 9s, a Ford 9-inch or even a Dana 60 will serve you well.

Thats an understatement... my 10-bolt is currently broken for the 4th time since I have owned my car. I am letting it sit there broken until I can get a 12-bolt. I wouldn't recommend anyone to waste a dime messing with a 10-bolt.

By quickly tacking it turn 180° tack it turn 90° tack it turn 180° tack. Then tack other tube. Then weld it up 1/2'' welds at a time using the same rotation methods.
The tubes are pressed in rather firmly so if it's done right it doesn't pull from heat. And yes I was a welder at work for a few years.
