GM 5 pinion planetaries question
GM 5 pinion planetaries question
I have a brand new Art Carr built 700R4 with all the billet parts, 13 vane pump etc setup to handle 700hp/600tq and I'm going to swap everything from the 700r4 into the 4l60e in my SS and I was wonderining if it would be worth it to add the front and rear GM 5 pinion planetaries while I'm at it?
I'm also having a na 383 built and I want to make the trans as strong as possible.

Besides me, there are others here that have the 4 pinion planetaries in nine second vehicles and they are not breaking. Unless someone gives you oem 5 pinion planetaries, stay with what you have you will be fine. I hope the Art Carr transmission you have does all that it claims.
There is absolutely no need for 5 pinion planetaries. 4 pinion planets are more than capable of holding up behind 800+ HP. When a planetary fails, it's usually due to the needle bearing, under the sun gear failing first. Once it fails, it sheds the needles through the planet pinions. This is capable of happening with eother planet. Also...don't even think about going near an aftermarket 5 pinion planet. They have a VERY high failure rate. Some shops substitute them to save money, but they just don't last. Many of them actually shatter the carrier, itself. A REAL GM 5 pinion rear planetary will run you over $300.

Thanks guys for all of your expert advise I was hoping you all would be the ones to answer my questions, I am going to have all of the parts transferred from the 700r4. I brought all of the parts from Art Carr about 6 years ago and had the 700r4 done locally and never got to install it in the car I had. So I figure since my 97 SS has a 4l60e and the parts all swap over from the 700r4 except for the valvebody I may as well use them and I ordered the 5 pinion planets from GM Parts Direct .com so I'm sure they are genuine GM parts and it was $490 for both.
