Which Gears?
Rebuilding my factory rear end on my 92' Z and was wondering what would be the best gears. It's a stock 10 bolt, 7 3/4" with 3.73's in it, I was thinking maybe going with 3.42's like the G92's but wasn't sure if it'd be worth it power wise, what do ya'll think?
Re: Which Gears?
well it really depends on what u want to do with it, ill assume its an automatic since ur thinking of putting in 3.42s and a lot of people run 3.73 and are perfectly happy with it but irs really just a matter of preference

here is a good site recommended by injuneer to me, it has what you will need depending on what you go with it and about as reasonably priced as youll find, also has the install kits since its a factory rear end you are going to need to replace your bearings and so on.

Re: Which Gears?
It has no mods to at this point but as of right now, my plans are to mildly mod it for street/strip purpose, mostly street though. I'd pretty much like the ability to enjoy playing with imports and other late model domestics from light to light or a short sprint down the freeway.
Re: Which Gears?
What gears have you got now? Assuming it's an automatic as well, since I don't think GM put the weak T5 behind the L98.
You shouldn't have any problems with going to 3.73's, as mentioned in a post above. Really wakes it up for the stoplight drags. You will need some sticky tires though. The 10-bolt is 7.5/7.625".

Re: Which Gears?
I've already got the 3.73's in it, Just wasn't sure if the I should go with what the G92's had or if that was just mostly hype for more money on GM's part. lol and yes, it's 700R4. When the car was still in good working order, first time I ever drove it, I was at a red light and needed to get over into the turn lane to get onto I20, I pushed 1/2 throttle and the tires were peeling. I like that feeling. ^-^ Just don't know if I can make it even better.
Re: Which Gears?
If you change from a 3.73 gear ratio to a 3.42 ratio, it will make your car feel like it lost 9% of the torque at the rear wheels. The lower the number, the less "grunt" it's going to have off the line. The G92 performance package was probably a step up to the 3.42's from a numerically lower rear axle ratio.
Are you saying you want to downgrade to try and reduce the wheel spin at 1/2 throttle?

Re: Which Gears?
Oh okay, that makes sense. Seeing as how it was the 2.73's that were in the earlier Camaro's.
I guess to put it in better terms, I love the feeling of that much power, I want to increase it if at all possible through gears. Since I'd have a 9% loss in torque going a step down, would my fuel economy increase at all or is it just by a minuscule amount that it really wouldn't make a difference?

Re: Which Gears?
Also as better clarification, The reason I was interested in the 3.42's was because I heard a lot of Third Gen owners bragging about having the G92 Package. Since all it mostly is is just gears and a slightly better braking, I figured it was some how superior to what my car came with stock.
Re: Which Gears?
The G92 package has a lot of features other then the 3.42 gears
(When ordered with A.C - $466))
-engine oil cooler
-4-wheel disc brakes
-dual converter exhaust
(Without A/C - $675)
-HD front brakes
-aluminum driveshaft
-aluminum spare wheel

At least that's what it shows in the Camaro White Book
