Gear install problem

I installed my 3.73 gears last night and theres way too much play. The teeth are barely even touching. I'm starting to think they are for a series 3 and I have a series 2.How the hell do I tell what series of gears i bought. There motive gears but all it says on the box is gm10 blt 7.5 3.73. The website i got them from said 82&up camaro but obviously there is different rears in our cars.here is the ebay link to what i bought.

What was the ratio of the stock gears you removed?

You could count the teeth on the ring gear, and divide by the number of teeth on the pinion, and that would tell you the ratio you just removed. A bit more reliable than going by the shift selector plate.

If you had 2.73's, you had a 2-series carrier. If you bought 3-series gears, a spacer is necessary, as mentioned in post #3.

Might want to verify with whoever sold you the 3.73's that they are in fact for a 3-series carrier.

Exclamation

Ok so i got the spacer, installed it and now its too tight and wont rotate.I called local shops and sounds like it needs diff side spacers.Anybody ever use the Strange spacer on there ring and pinion install? Also one shop said the spacers are no good and hes seen people sheer bolts. Everyone wants 2-$300 to set up and thats with me bringing them just the rear dif already disassembled WTF! Any advice would be appreciated.

As you are seeing, a gear install and setup is not for the backyard mechanic. There's a reason that they charge you to set it up. They've invested money in the correct tools, and instruments. They learned a lot from their mistakes.

How did you set the pinion depth?

With a rubber mallet and a impact gun! lmao jk. Ahhh Yeah i know nothing about setting up rear ends except what ive read, knew i was over my head on this one.Was going for the cross my fingers and hope it went together correctly. I've got a local performance shop that is going to let me bring my rear end in and teach me how to set it up properly.
