The '94 transmission is a non PWM unit, meaning the torque converter has an off/on lock up strategy. In '95 GM switched to the pulsed lock up strategy, which added an extra (PWM) solenoid to the valve body. This also required a new TCC control valve, wiring, seperator plate, and pump assembly. Then, in '96 GM changed the 3-2 downshift strategy, which required a 3-2 solenoid with a different resistance, as well as a new valve body casting and 3-2 downshift valve assembly to further differentiate them from a '94 unit. The easiest way to determine a '94 trans from a '95-up is to look for the letters "PWM" which is cast on all '95-up from pumps.

Re: exact internal differances from 1994 to 1996 4l60e
thank you very much i've been doing so much searching with bits-n-peices here n there. I got a used trans but have no ideal what year it is. I'm doing the 24x conversion and need the 96' and newwer trans and from what i did find searching i think it;s a 94' so if you dont mind another question sisnce your the only one who had info for me. how hard would it be to put all the required 96' items in my 94' trans or is that something for a shop? again thank you very much

There should be a derivative of the original vehicles VIN stamped on the edge of the bell housing. That will allow you to determine the year.
