Red face Dumb question - tranny overfill

What are some symptoms of overfilling the transmission? Specifically referring to a 4L60E. Would it cause it to slip badly? When is the best time to check the level? Hot or cold.

Thanks,
Greg

Not sure what the symptoms are, but I have read that it is a bad thing. You check it hot.

Not 100% sure on this but if you overfill the trans, fluid will usually spew out of the tube on the top of the trans. How much did you put in it? Was this just a simple drop the pan change the filter and refill or was the trans completely empty including the converter?

Overfilling is definitely bad. Check it hot with the engine running.

Re: Tranny overfill question

Thanks guys. I should have given some more info. Sorry about that. I bought the car with it overfilled and the transmission has slipped since I have had it. I am about to change it (or take it somewhere to have it done). If anything changes I will report back.

I figured it should be measured hot. I'm just used to 4-speed Muncies where you add gear oil to the bottom level of the plug - no fuss, no muss.

Changing the fluid is quite simple, although it can be a bit messy. You will want to change the filter at the same time. Not sure if slipping is a characteristic of an overfilled system.
Hope it works out for you.

Re: Dumb question - tranny overfill

Overfilling can cause the fluid to partly submerge the spinning parts, causing the fluid to get frothed with bubbles, and extra hot. Both of those things can impede hydraulic pressure and oil flow, so could contribute to slipping. If it's been slipping for long, the friction materials could be worn out.
