downshift?

i was on another site and they were saying that not putting a 4l60e in gear is bad if u are about to race!
from what i gathered, if u have 3.23 gears and are cruising at say, 65 in OD. and u hit it and it drops into 2nd, they are saying that is bad on the tranny! and that u are supposed to manually put it in 2nd gear and then floor it!
does this sound right to anyone else? i have been pondering on this for a while now
another thing they were saying was, flooring it at any given speed under 100 and keeping it floored all the way through the 3-4 shift is bad as well!
....so what, am i supposed to let out right b4 the shift and then floor it again?

Re: downshift?

HA! And I suppose they all know this from what?!! Their extensive experience in street racing? Or maybe they're all engineers from GM and spent countless hours of R&D into 4L60E development (if that's true, give me their e-mails so I can send them a nasty e-mail )

A late model e-controlled trans is probably best left alone. I know that first gear has a safety feature that will not allow a 1st downshift until it's safe, but 2nd does not (ask me how I know this ). It's a good idea to let it do it's thing to avoid any user errors or other wierd crap that GM products like to start when they're treated erratically.

Re: downshift?

This get talked about a lot. Some say its bad others say it's good. I do know that when my 3rd and 4th gear went out, I went as fast as 70mph in 2nd gear, rpms I think were like 4500. And yes, it did move very quick.

So in racing sense I guess 2 gear would be the kick *** gear. Just don't know how safe it is in an auto from freeway run over 60 mph, then manually downshifting to from 4th.

Re: downshift?

hhhhhhhhhhmmmmmm...... well if u are goin 60 (cruisin) and floor it, the computer drops the tranny into 2nd. so y would u manually drop it? the computer is not, or i should say "shouldnt" let it drop into 2nd from OD when ur rpm's are to high in 2nd.

Re: downshift?

I've heard this too. Don't know if this is true or not.

One thing i will say though my brother in his 3rd gen camaro was manually down****ing while racing up a hill and fried his tranny not sure which gears though I'd have to ask him. But that was a different transmission compared to ours.

I heard that you can reprogram the pcm so that the pcm downshifts when the throttle plate is half way open or something like this.

Because of how my car reacts to when I manually downshift I wish I would have bought a manul tranny car. But I have heard and some members may confirm this, with a good high stall torque converter there wouldn't be no need to manualy drop to a lower gear in an A4, because all the dead spots in an A4 would be gone with the high stall torque converter.
