Differential/Rear End fluid changing?

When is this suppose to be done? I have a 1991 Firebird with a 3.1 and an amazing 26,000 miles on it ( Carfaxed and long story) I've done much to maintain the car but for this im not too sure..My father says theres no point in even doing it because its extremely thick oil.He works for a trucking company and say they dont even do it to their trucks that travel up and down the east coast. Is it really needed and how much would it cost?
