Code P1870

I'm posting this for somone who isn't a member of the board. He has a 97. And he has about 99k on the car. Recently he has reicieved this trouble code P1870 , and the transmission shifts much harder. He had the fluid changed, but it didn't make a difference.

He is in TN. What would you suggest he do? Any tranny shop recommendations? Is it a chance its just a sensor?

Thanks in advance guys,
Mike

Re: Code P1870

Code means one of the tranny components are slipping. Hard to diagnose without looking at it.

I guess he's going to have to check for a good shop in KY to look at it. Thanks Fred

Re: Code P1870

Code 1870 can be derived from a number of things.
Most commonly it's caused by a worn TCC regulator valve bore in the valvebody. When fluid leaks past this valve, it allows the converter to slip, and the computer picks up that slip.

Sonnax Industries has a reamer and valve kit that will fix this problem. The valvebody has to come off to fix it, though. The stock valves come out, the bore is reamed, and a new valve and sleeve are put in their place. This is providing nothing else is slipping inside the transmission. If the fluid is clean, and there's no sediment in the pan, I'd look toward the valve.

Be aware...Some shops will try to sell a rebuild to fix this problem. We fix the problem without trying to sell a rebuild. Most dealerships will try selling you a new transmission...Or atleast a new $400 valvebody. We charge $150 to pull the valvebody, and fix the problem.
