Clutch Choice Crisis

First of all, whats up everybody, I'm new to posting but I've been getting tips from members for years, now I gotta get some feedback. Opinions/facts/ and stories on the mid power range clutch department, I've got a 94' Z thats putting 320hp down at the wheels and now it needs a new clutch, I've heard so much controversy about Centerforce and Spec, SLP, McLeod, hell everybody, but now its time for a decision, can anyone help??

Re: Clutch Choice Crisis

Its seems most people have problems when they replace the clutch and use the stock flywheel to me. I just put in a Spec Stage 2 with the billet steel flywheel. I think its good to 475 ft/lbs. No noise of any kind and great engagement, no complaints from me The best price I found at the time was through Speed Emgineering.

Re: Clutch Choice Crisis

I'm sure I'm the minority here, but I love my centerforce. Bought it used and it holds 360 rwhp and 360 tq with no problems, hot lapping it and slipping it and what not. I also have an aluminum flywheel. The flywheel issue it mainly when its been resurfaced too far I think. Easily enough solved with a shim. You shouldn't need to do that to yours though. I don't think you can go wrong with a centerforce or a spec. I don't care much for the SLP, its basically just a stock clutch. AFAIK, all the pressure plates are essentially the same anyways, as they are all made by valeo. Its the disc that makes the difference. FWIW, my centerforce disc is unsprung and is the easiest car to drive I've ever seen, even with the cam.

Re: Clutch Choice Crisis

SPEC STAGE III I know you may have seen horror stories but i think they have fixed the problem for the most part. I have the new version and it is holding great after about 6,000 miles. I have had it at the track and i hot lapped it 3 times in a row on drag radials and it bit just as hard the 3rd time as it did the 1st.

I have a friend with a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch in his 94 that consistently tags 12.2 at the track I agree that it is also a great clutch, I just figured that a Dual Friction was over doing for my current application. I dont think you can go wrong either way. My understanding on the SLP clutch is that is the equivilant to a stock LT4, good, but still not very performance minded. Whatever you order just make sure its the right parts that go in correctly to specification per manufacturer and it should perform without flaw.

Re: Clutch Choice Crisis

If you can afford it, get the Street Twin. You have to look pretty hard to find someone who has been disappointed in the ST.

i haven't had any exp. with the centerforce but it think the spec III is the better buy, i have heard things about both clutches although spec has an excellent customer service department!!

Run 1/4 mile pass after 1/4 mile pass in quick succession. Clutch doesnt really have a chance to cool down in between runs is what makes it more of a test for a clutch.
