changing t56 fluid

how often should i have to change the fluid in my t56. i know the manual doesnt say anything about having to change it out. but i would assume it wouldnt hurt anything to do it. ive got 114k on the clock. want to make sure that it lasts another 114k. preciate it.

Drail. Refill. Easy enough. Most manual trans' are MFR recommended every 50k miles to replace fluid.

yeah, i didnt figure it would be a difficult procedure. i knew that the autos had to be done every 60k. i just didnt know if manual tranny's were the same. thanks.

they don't want your T56 to last forever

i'm changing mine every 20,000 or 2 years

but it could probably go longer

It's cheap insurance to change it; T56 holds about 3.75 quarts.

I have a funnel with a long tube that runs down to the side of the tranny and fill it that way, then wait until I see fluid start to come out

or you can fill it thru the shifter by removing the console..........
dont use standard gear oil, T56 is setup for ATF fluid

filling it through the shifter wouldnt be a bad idea. i was actually wondering about that one. how much easier is it to do it that way considering you have to remove about 15 little bolts to get to it as apposed to just filling it through the side. the only thing that looks complicated about filling it through the side is getting a funnel under there and trying to get the oil to go into a hole directly on the side of a transmission. anyways, i'm glad you cleared that up about the fluid. i went to buy some dexron III ATF today because i swore i saw a that label on the side of the tranny many times when i changed the clutch (shouldve changed the fluid then!). the guy at Napa said that that doesnt seem likely that it would use ATF and to double check with the manual. he said he doesnt believe he ever heard of anyone putting ATF in a manual tranny before. thought it was more than likely gear oil (which i'm sure is more common). alright, thanks guys.
