Can i do this axle swap?

I want to change the 2.73 gears in my 98 z28. I am going to the salvage yard next week to get a stock cd player out of a 02 firebird that has a v6. I got to thinking it might not be any more money to buy the whole axle out of the wrecked v6 firebird than to buy new gears for my car and pay to have a shop set them up. Do the years interchange? and do the v6 and v8's hve the same rear axles? what about the ABS system? thanks

Yes it will bolt right up if you have the same ABS. The v6 axle is most likely not going to have a posi.

Look for a V6 with the RPO code "Y87" -- those will have a posi.

V6 autos have 3.08:1 rear gears, V6 manuals have 3.23's. AFAIK this is true for all 4th-gen V6's.

That was something i didnt think about. I will have to look on the door and see if it says G80. But i think you are right, have'nt seen any v6 camaros with the limited slip.

Sounds right.

So then you're looking for the Y87 (limited slip / posi) and GU5 (3.23's) .

Re: Can i do this axle swap?

The Y87 RPO code was the sportier production of the v6 cars. G80 was the code for posi/limited slip. The Y87 code included the G80/posi as part of the package.

Re: Can i do this axle swap?

Ok so i am looking for either a Y87 or a G80 code. am i correct that they didnt offer a 3.42 or 3.73 for the v6 camaros and firebirds? Would i feel a difference between my 2.73 and a 3.08 or 3.23?
