Re: best transmission
don't waste your time with 4l60e, no matter who builds it it will go out once you start getting into the higher power levels. If you insist on sticking with it though check out flp(www.flponline.com), they are probably the best guys out there. They specifically specialize in building f-body transmissions so they know what they're doing. If you want a reliable trans that will last though go with the th400 or if you have the money the 4l80e, which is basically a th400 with overdrive.
Re: best transmission
No good tranny is going to be cheap. A TH400 lacks OD and this really inhibits enjoyable street use. Yeah, when I was a kid we had cars without OD and ran all over the place with them, but I guess I/we am/are spoiled now. If you need a really sturdy auto trans with an OD gear, the two main options are a TH400 with a GV OD or a 4L80. Both are going to be expensive and neither are "plug and play". There are vendors here on the board with good reputations for building 4L60's for moderate power, you could talk to them. I don't know how much he is into the 4L60, but Carl Rossler builds great TH400's and 'glides. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a 4L60 from him is top notch as well.
One option that has occurred to me though I have never seen it tried. If you have gobs of torque, you could use a TH400 and a very tall rear end gear. It could function like a 'glide with an OD. When I was thinking of a big block for the Z28 this was the way I was leaning. With a 26" tire and 2.73's you could cruise at 60mph at ~2,100rpm. With 28" tires (at the track) 2nd would be good for ~140mph with a 6,800 redline. But a small block in a heavy car might not cut it with the 2.48 first gear. However, there are shorter first gear ratios available. I'd like it if you were the first to try this! I didn't have the guts.
