My friend's z28 goes all the way to redline, wont shift.
Are his solenoids dead or something?

Time to call Dana for a rebuild kit. You could check the shift setting vs the redline but I'm sure the tranny is done, at least mine was when it did the same thing.

 

I'd need a little more information to diagnose it. What year is the vehicle? Does the speedometer work? Any "SES" lights? Has it been scanned for codes? Does the fluid smell burnt? Is the fluid dark (black or brown)?

does it have enough fluid? is vacuum modulator connected if modulated transmission?...

 

Mine started to do that when it was on it's way out. Try changing the trans fluid but a rebuild is probably near
