97FormulaWS-6, here's some reading for you:

Also, the Dana 44 rear end I mentioned was installed on the 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am. You used to be able to order it through GMPP (part # 14044853) but I don't think it's available anymore.

One more thing, the Borg-Warner 9-bolt has a 7.75" ring gear.

I have the torque and HP curves for the L98, LT1 and LS1, overlayed on one another. The L98 has more torque at low RPM than either the LT1 or LS1. Those long intake runners made great low end torque. The shorties in the LT1 shift some of the torque higher up in the RPM band. GM wouldn't install the T5 with the high HP L98's, because it couldn't handle the torque.

noticed there are very few of those models hitting over 300ft lbs of torque. Dont know I've drove and owned quite a few 3rd gens and a gta is the fastest hardest pulling one I ever drove but my stock 94 z convertible still felt like it launched harder would turn the tires way easier and would just walk away from any of those cars. I had quite a few mods on my 91 z28 and never broke a rearend, but the fourth gens will tear them right out with sticky tires.

Yes its odd. My 88 IROC 350 would get with the program. relatively speaking, and I never had a rear problem.
Maybe I will try it just for grins and see what happens.

It's not much cheaper than the 9/12 but I would do this before trying to build up a stocker. Been there done that and didn't like it. lol.

Hey, I take issue with that!

My 8.8" came out GREAT. It has the same diameter (strength) gearset as a 12-bolt, and it's lighter.

Check out my pictures. It looks much nicer in person. The pictures don't do it justice.

An 8.8" can be made 3 or 4-series ABS compatible and there are plenty of posi/gear choices available. They're also cheaper than a 12-bolt.

FWIW, a local guy's currently having an 8.8" built for his 140 mph trap Z28.
