any ideas???

So i'm driving down the road, 80 mph and the car is at 2K RPMs like always...i hit traffic, have to come to almost a stop...next time i get it back up to 80 the tach reads 2600 RPMs or so and wont drop?? whats the deal...i know its in OD b/c i shifted to 3rd and the RPMs went even higher...dont know if its the transmission, or could it possibly be the gears going bad b/c there's some whining from back there. Also just put a shift kit in but its shifting fine.

was it actually revving higher or were the rpms just reading higher.

If it was revving higher have the tranny looked at.

If it was just the rpms reading higher, then replace your cam position sensor behind the intake manifold. Its the short sensor
