Any Gain With Converter locked Up?

Please post your gains if any after locking the converter. What gear are you locking up in?

Locking the converter on the dyno may give you more overall HP. However, it usually has the opposite effect in the quarter mile. The reason is because it pulls the engine RPM's down under the power band, which slows the car down.

Re: Any Gain With Converter locked Up?

When a good designed torque converter is in the open position (unlocked) it is always multiplying torque to some degree, once the TC is locked up, there is no more TC multiplication, and now you have the inherent pumping losses of the automatic transmission as compared to a stick shift, and the vehicle will run slower in the quarter mile. When a TC is matched to your motor, rear end gears, tires, etc., it will always be quicker in the quarter mile in the unlocked position. On supercharged or turbocharged motors, sometimes there are slight gains when locking the TC, but this is the exception.
