9" Posi or Locker?
9" Posi or Locker?
Well, after months of prep, a Mcleod Steet Twin Clutch, complete new rear suspension... I broke on my second pass of the year this week-end. I ended up cracking the stock posi carrier in my 9-inch at the cross-pin holes right off of the launch. Now, where do I go from here? I would like to just spool it and be done with it but I drive the car on the road allot and my Jeep is spooled and it sucks on the road. I could take the safe route and buy a good Auburn posi, or but a Detroit for like 40 bucks more. I just afraid that it's road manners won't be great either. Does anyone currently have a Detroit? How does it act going around corners?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: 9" Posi or Locker?
Well I hear that they have a new locker out that is better mannered on the street but either way... I have a Detroit locker in my car. Yes, its loud and the car doesn't drive as smooth because you feel almost every shift because the locker disengages and then reengages. Some people can't stand the noise, but I am use to the noise and don't hear it anymore because of that. However, when I ride in someone else's F-body I do miss how smoothe their car drives. Basically near as I can describe it would be driving a car with a locker is similar to riding in a car with someone who learned how to drive a clutch an hour before.
Is your car an auto or m6? I have never been in an auto with a locker, just 6 speeds. As far as cornering goes, just don't accelerate while cornering and you'll be fine. A little bit of practice and you'll never know its there. Since I don't mind a little less ride comfort, I would recomend the locker. Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention, car is a 6 speed. During shifts when it disengages and then reengages, does it just make noise or can you actually feel it, does make any light clunking? My car makes a fair bit of noice already but I don't want to be a ble to feel it too.

On thing is, do you want to spend a fortune on the posi so you can break it again, or drive on the streets with a spool? unfortunatly its a toss up. Yet another problem with drag racing a 6 speed, they are just so much harder on parts because they are so violent.
Re: 9" Posi or Locker?
If you like to do any corner carving, the locker will push in the turns upsetting the road manners. I yanked my locker out after 2 years and installed Traction Loc I purchased from Randy's Ring and Pinion. Helpful guys, give them a call and ask them what they would recommend.
Re: 9" Posi or Locker?
I spoke with: DTS and they recommended a True-Track, Reider's and they recommended a stock style Track Lock made by US Gear, and Randy's and they recommended an upgraded billet Track Lock made by Yukon for about $370. I think I may go with the Yukon unit because I would like it to be as smooth as possible on the street but still hold up at the strip.
Re: 9" Posi or Locker?
I'm running a TrueTrac in my 9" and I love it. After riding in a couple of different cars with different setups, I decided against a locker since I couldn't stand the noise and decided against a spool because it was such a bitch trying to maneuver in tight spaces. I thought about a clutch style diff, but didn't want to be replacing it if I fried it at the track. The TrueTrac is dead silent and works great. The only thing that took some getting used to was coming out of tight corners...if you give it enough throttle, it'll lock up and try to fight you a bit. I really don't notice it at all now though.
Re: 9" Posi or Locker?
How is it for lauching at the strip? What kind of power are you putting to it? I would like to go with a True Track but the technicians I have been talking to are warning me that it might not hold up to 5000rpm+ dumps with slicks.
Re: 9" Posi or Locker?
I haven't taken it to the strip yet...I'm still waiting on getting a dyno tune done since I threw a new cam in a couple of months ago. I'm guessing it should put down somewhere between 400-430RWHP. It's a beefy little bastard...I'll be very surprised if I manage to break it on a launch.
Re: 9" Posi or Locker?
I drove a spool on the street daily for 2 years… at some point once you get used to killing posi’s you start liking it better, since the car reacts the same way EVERY time with the spool where with a posi you didn’t know what it was going to do (after a while I started logging it with my dragstrip passes and found that I was killing a posi every 34-36 passes).
You get used to the skipping around that you get in tight parking lot type situations, even my wife that bitches about all sorts of things in my cars didn’t seem to be bothered by it, she would just imitate the sound that the car was going to make as we were about to pull into a parking space…

Re: 9" Posi or Locker?
I have a spool in the back of my Jeep, drove it on the road for about 2 years so I know what it's like. I've also had a shimmed posi in the back of my car and I hated it for everyday driving. I want the car to feel as close to stock as possible. It makes enough sounds and clunks as it is! Randy's offers a billet posi that can be ordered street or race rated for about $360. I think I'm going to try it out.
Re: 9" Posi or Locker?
I'm running the Detroit True Trac in my 9inch also. I had a spool and hated the street manners. The True Trac is great on the street, I havn't had it to the track yet though. I drive with Nittos on the street and drive hard. I have a T-56 and a street twin and I don't think I will be breaking it at my power level.
