Re: 9 bolt strength

If you are going to have that much power (IF) any rear is going to be a crap shoot.

Re: 9 bolt strength

You're talking about the Ford 9" third member design? Very tough if built right. A 12-bolt by Currie, Strange, Moser, DTS, etc. will be pretty tough, too. Can also keep ABS brakes with no prob on 12-bolts, 9" rears need a reluctor to be fabbed up to get ABS to work with them.

Re: 9 bolt strength

No, 9 bolt. It's the Australian rear by Borg Warner found in the thirdgen's. Supposedly stronger than the 10 bolt. No c-clips, it has backing plates. Larger spider gears too. Ratios are 2.77 most common, 3.27 and 3.70 which is fairly rare. Not many companies are making parts and they are expensive. Strange Engineering is making aftermarket gear sets for them. Do some research on thirdgen.org

Re: 9 bolt strength

Ah, my bad. Been trying to decide between 9" and 12-bolt. I have heard (not much) about the Borg Warner 9-bolt but it didn't click. Do they have bigger ring gear dia.? From Nasty TA's description, it sounds like it might be tougher than the 10-bolt.

Re: 9 bolt strength

stronger than 10 bolt, but still not enough for a good amount of power. I know I'll be breaking mine soon. Had the motor on the dyno today and it made 447 at the flywheel before tuning. Looking for 475 tomorrow.

Re: 9 bolt strength

The BW 9-bolt was last installed in 3rd gen cars in 1989.
A performance rear with a 7.750 dia ring gear, no "C" clips on the 28 spline axle shafts, Cone type limited slip and larger side pinions & spider gears. Was available stock in 2:77, 3:27 & 3:45 with very few parts available on the aftermarket. None at GM Dealers. A stonger rear then the stock 10-bolt, however it was NEVER designed for more then 300 Hp and Drag Strip launches. Remenber this was the Eighties.
