Arrow Gaging interest in 8.5" ten bolts for F-Bodies...

I am going to work with my rearend people and see if we can come up with a way to adapt the 8.5" ten bolt to F-Bodies. Much like the current 12 bolts but at a CHEAPER price. These would be very close to a 12 bolt in strength yet cheaper. ANY INTEREST?

very. Costs....? There are 8.5s running 8s these days. Solid construction and hardware make it so and the diffs are plentiful. Get us a real price please.

Well I've been thinking of either a 12 bolt or a 9" for a few months now and I don't have the money yet for either one. Yes....price please!!

Cool

It would have to be ALOT cheaper to even consider it. New parts are expensive to rebuild rearends, and you would not be using used stuff, right?

The housing is one of the cheaper components. Tack on a differential, gears, and axles and you're still racing on team bankrupt.

Maybe I'm way off - its been a while since I priced this stuff.

If the cost were around 1500$ I'd be interested.

I would be VERY intrested as well I am going over rear end options now if you could get it right between beefing up 10 bolt 600 and 12 bolt 2100 I would definately consider it!!

It would be cool to get it done and keep the pricing low. But I don't see how it will be appreciably cheaper than a 12-bolt or 9". The differentials, axles, gears, etc. all cost about the same for any of the rear-ends. And the labor to weld on the TA and shock/spring mounts doesn't change.

At any rate, good luck on it Kev.

I know of someone who already looked into it. The problem was that he didnt find a way to produce them for a reasonable price. Its a great idea, and If you could actually produce one for a lower cost than a 12 bolt it would certainly sell. It can be made on a personal level, if you can weld and have the tooling to set one up, an 8.5" 10 bolt can be made to fit your car at a reasonable price. But thats someone making one for themself. Mass producing them it becomes a problem. I know I would be in line to get one. The problem is the things that have already been stated. Just to buy the parts to make it a reliable rear arent too bad, but you still have to make it fit an f-bod... do it yourself and your ok. By the time its all said and done haveing them mass produced its not much cheaper than a 12bolt/9". Not trying to discourage it at all... I would certainly buy one if the price was right. But when it comes out to be $1900 to make one... why not just buy a 12 bolt. I personally belive an 8.5" 10 bolt would be the way to go in my car... all the auto guys could easily go very fast with one and be reliable at the same time. It is a definate money maker if it can be built for a reasonable price.

SLP used to sell a Dana 44 rear for the 1982-92 F-Bodies. It also had a 8.5" ring gear. It was the rear that came in the old 1LE cars. From what I remember, it was relatively inexpensive. Maybe instead of looking for something totally new, you all could convince them to bring it back. At one time it was even available through Summit. Note that the 1982-92 rears require a bunch less back-spacing (more available wheels).

Just a thought,

Daren

Thats a good idea. Hopefully it can happen. But has anyone thought about the Ford 8.8? They seem to be readily available, and cheap and really strong also.

I thought of the 8.8 too as a good rear. it will def. hold enough power to go 9's even. all thats really needed (assuming the rear end overall width is the same or close is the brackets). t/a and l.c.a.'s mounts. then custom axle's w/the chevy 5 bolt patter drilled into them.

I thought someone was already making the 8.5's? for around $1200 I thought? (minus brakes thouhgh.

How about titanium gear sets. Thats what we use in the sprint car. It would obviously be a little more expensive that a regular gear set but I doubt it would be more expensive than a 12-bolt. If I would have to guess I'd say 600-700$ for a titanium gear set. You could upgrade the posi and axles and still have less in it that a 12-bolt.
