Do It Yourself Gear intall

I am 20 years old and I have been working on cars since aboutr 16, I have never really got into the drivetrain, I am doing my clutch next weekend and I want to do 4.10's also, how hard is that to do and what tools does it require.

basically is this OK to do for a DIY mechanic.
thanks

Re: Do It Yourself Gear intall

Honestly... for a DIY it's a crap-shoot.

It cost me about ~$150 for the tools; the most expensive being the pinion depth indicator, and the backlash indicator mount.

With the guidence of people who have done this before, I was able to do it in about 2 hours the first time... the second time with different people I did it in about 1.5 hours... the third time it only took me about an hour to get rid of that POS 10-bolt rearend that did NOTHING but whine and vibrate no matter how things were setup and bolt in my new Strange 12-bolt and Denny Nitrous Ready DS...

I've heard of people having good luck doing it themselves, but from someone who is 24 and has built 4 cars from the ground up, and has wrenched on cars since I was 10; I've come to the conclusion that at this time and skill level, I'm leaving setting up gears to the professionals. I can build engines, trannys, frames, and just about everything else, but setting up rear end gears is an art form.

the proper methods include the use of a pinion depth gage, calculator ,backlash gage, bearing press, torque wrench, and a method to crush the collapsable spacer to yield the proper rotaional torque on the pinion shaft.this is very important .as a youth i watched others attempt this with crude methods, and quickly understood that there was no substitute for the proper tools as the results when they were used was always as a sucess rather than an immediate or eventual failure that would occur without them.www.ckperformance.coom
