7-5/8" Rear Interchange Questions

Got a few questions for those poe foke among us who are forced to live with our 10-bolts until Santa gets here...

1) Are all 3rd and 4th gen F-bodies the 7-5/8" ring gear? Did they ever have the 7.5"?

2) Do all 7-5/8" rears have the same axle splines? For example, if I get a 99 S10 center section will the spiders have the same splines as an 89 Camaro axle?

3) When did they stop making the 7-5/8"? Did they ever stop? Please tell me they stopped that. What do new Trailblazers use? I have to think an LS-engined Trailblazer SS would eat one a day?

Just trying to figure out what all GM models of vehicles to scavenge for parts.

Re: 7-5/8" Rear Interchange Questions

the 7.5/7.625 designations ONLY apply to the gearset.

7.5 is the same as 7.625.
a 7.625 rearend has a 7.625 OD ring gear mounted on a 7.5 carrier.
a 7.5 rearend has a 7.5 OD ring gear mounted on a 7.5 carrier.
rearend parts are the same: bearings, seals, shims, etc.

they might have gone to the 7.625 gear in 1994,not sure.

older splines were 26,think that ended in 1988,not sure.

Go to some rearend sites, like Richmond,Motive-lot of interchange info.

Thanks man I didn't think about going to a gear site to look for interchange, will report back if I find anything useful!

Re: 7-5/8" Rear Interchange Questions

Looks like generally speaking 1978-2002 pretty much is universal for 7.5 and 7.625" components.

However, I do see some hints that the 2002 Trailblazer may have had a different unit, so I'd only rely on up to 2001 to be sure.
