6 speed swap

Re: 6 speed swap
you could run without for a while...but you'll need the consol insert for a manual.
pedals, hydraulics, master cyl, ECM reprogram, gears...must have since the manual needs at least a 3.42 and auto comes max with 3.23. new cross member brace or tranny mount. i think that's it.

That should get you started!!
As for gear ratios? Well, 3.42's would be good (obviously, since that's what the M6's came with) but right now I'm driving with 3.23's in mine, and they're working ok (for now!) I still managed a 13.4 @ 107 in the 1/4 mile, and I've already been out on a road course with the car, and it's doing just fine! BUT, I've got a set of 3.90's waiting to go in (over the winter).
Good luck with it ... I haven't had a moment of regret yet, except now regretting the last ~4+ years of driving the auto!!!

Re: 6 speed swap
I'm not a mechanic ... my Dad is, so I've spent countless hours in the garage learning how to wrench on a car ... but I did the entire swap by myself, and only got a buddy to help me lift the auto out from under the car, and hoist the T56 up into the car (and he helped in a couple places where you need 2 sets of hands). Otherwise, nothing is terribly "difficult", just tedious for the most part. Heck, getting the bellhousing bolts out from the A4 took me awhile, and was one of the most frustrating parts of the entire job!
I'd say I took roughly ~24 hours of slow paced work to do the swap. I've read in another forum where guys have taken almost half that amount of time, but that's been with 2 or 3 guys working the entire time, and not wasting any time (I work pretty slow I think ).
Worth it? For me it was, but it's because I've gotten into road racing, and since that's what burned up my 4L60E in the first place, I saw no point in trying to continue with a transmission not designed for that type of racing .
