4l60e questions

I have had some pretty decent luck with a local builder. But they dont like to stray from stock rebuilds to much and I'm gettin to the level where I need to start doing some hard parts. Trannies seem to be left more to the pro then engine rebuilds do. I would like to start doing my own rebuilds is th GM 4l60e service manual a good buy. (will i be getting over my head) Also why is there is no transbrake option for 4l60e is it the electronics? Or tranny to weak?

Re: 4l60e questions

The 4L60E is a very complicated transmission to get right. There are very many modifications and updates that need to be done to get one to hold up in a high performance application. A GM manual will only tell you how to build it to stock standards. Incase you're wondering, no a performance 4L60E isn't just a stock 4L60E with a shift kit. There's much more to it than that.

There are a few companies working on a transbrake for the 4L60E.

Yeah I knew a tranny with shift kit wouldnt be considered a performace tranny. What HP do you fill comfortable with your pro race level? At a certain level do you reccomend going to a 350 or 400??

Re: 4l60e questions

The "Pro Race" build will work in anything that's not bumping the high 9's yet. After that, I'd suggest a TH400. A TH350 shouldn't really be considered because they're not really any stronger than a PROPERLY built 700/4L60E.

Do you believe that a trans brake would help 60 ft times?

Re: 4l60e questions

I've got 60E's pulling 1.50 60 ft. times without a 'brake.

Re: 4l60e questions

A trans-brake only helps consistency at best, and is much harder on everything. A properly matched torque converter to your particular motor/vehicle setup, will give you the best 60 foot times. I have these units in 1996 Firebirds turning 1.27-1.33 60 foot times (foot braking), going low 10's at 132-135mph. So would a trans-brake help 60 foot times?, not from my experience.
