4L60E broken :( Code 84 - what to do?
4L60E broken :( Code 84 - what to do?
My 94 A4 4L60E is throwing a code 84 "3-2 downshift solenoid feedback fault". I replaced the solenoid (old one measured ok, but figured why not), pulled the plug off the trans and measured through the wires, that's okay too.
It starts in 2nd (or 3rd) gear and doesn't shift correctly at all.
Any idea what's wrong? Any good troubleshooting sites on the web? I've looked, searched here - can't find much on code 84.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Re: 4L60E broken :( Code 84 - what to do?
more than likely it is internal mechanical damage.install a scan tool and read output spped and compare it to input rpm in first gear manual lo.this will immediately show the problems root cause and if its mechanical ,hydraulic,or electrical.if you need further info or a trans visit us at www.ckperformance.com

Check your fuses. A 3rd gear start with a 60E is usually a result of it being in "fail safe". You can also manually check for 12V at pin "E" at the case connector. It should have voltage with the key on.
Usually it will throw more codes than just the 84 if the case connector has come unhooked.

Frank knows his stuff. Start by clearing codes; either have codes cleared at Autozone or the like, or simply disconnect the battery for 30 minutes or so.
If it's more than a transient problem, or if you solved it with the nerw parts, it should now behave. otherwise, further diagnosis is in order... and the dealer is NOT the place for this. Almost all dealers either bolt in a GM reman trans with the same problems as all stock transmissions or send then out to an outside trans specialist for rebuild... and either way, they'll charge you the earth.
If you're in or near Maryland/Delaware, Frank can build you a full race 4L60E that should hold up well into the low 11 second range for around 1500... which includes ALL the good parts and R&R.
There is no better deal out there.

I checked pin E on the "car" side of the connector -- no power while ignition on. I looked at both fuse blocks (there are only 2, right?) -- no blown fuses. Maybe a broken wire? What fuse supplies the trans?

Re: 4L60E broken :( Code 84 - what to do?
According to this E comes from main power and is fused, but this is for a 95, not sure if there is a difference... I did a little more looking but haven't found much yet I will look a little more though...
BTW, If it is broke or blown, send it to Frank he knows his stuff and will really take care of you...

Re: 4L60E broken :( Code 84 - what to do?
Got 12V on pin "E" - must've been looking at the wrong one before. Still in fail safe mode. If I put it in 1st gear, it will go into 1st gear. (I have the little block removed on my shifter so I can shift to 1st).
How can I diagnose this thing? I don't want to just yank the trans out, send it to somebody (Frank) only to find out it's another problem. And, as was pointed out above, the dealer is probably not the place to go.
Is there a shop manual with diagnostic info?

Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, and then try driving the car normally. Will it shift through all 4 gears after disconnecting and reconnecting it? Unhooking the battery clears the codes.

I unhooked the battery for about 20 minutes (was just how long it was before I got back to it), reconnected and drove it. The first time I put it in drive, it started in 1st gear. It shifted into 2nd, 3rd okay. I never went fast enough to get into 4th. While in 3rd gear, I came to a stop and it never downshifted into 2nd or 1st. Also, when coasting while in 3rd there is no engine braking - the engine goes to an idle.
I started/stopped a couple times and it's always starting in (I'm pretty sure it's 3rd, not 2nd). I did try manually shifting to 1st and it does go into gear and seems to be ok. But, it never does start in 1st/2nd once it's shifted past 1/2.

Re: 4L60E broken :( Code 84 - what to do?
Does anybody know where I can find troubleshooting guides/books?
I'm getting desperate and as pointed out above, taking it to the dealer isn't a good idea.
I'd REALLY appreciate any help!
