4:10's question
4:10's question
I searched alot on this but didnt quite find what im looking for.
Anyways with my M6 i plan on swaping my 3:42's to 4:10's, i have 131K on my car, do u guys think this is a bad idea, for the motor, and esp the Rear? i usually dont spin the tires often unless needed. i am going to go withthe GM motive gear set w/ install kit. i know 4:10's are easy gears to break, but im wondering if its tooo much stress on my 131k car.
Do the aftermarket rear end girdles do anything to strengthen the rear? or r they more for looks?
What would you guys pay at a shop for installation?
My main concern is beatin this kid at work who keeps talkin smack, casue he is gettin an LS1 t/a vert Auto, and im tellin him im gonna give him a run for his money. I know i need some good headers next, but i figure gears are cheaper at this point

Re: 4:10's question
As long as you set them up right you should be fine. Although if I were you I would get headers first. By the time you get the gears, install kit, new stronger cover, and any equipment you need you don't already have (such as a dial indicator), they're about the same price as the headers- if longtubes are an option, anyway. 4.10s will help you get the jump, but the headers will help a lot once you get going. Either way you won't be disappointed. And the support cover helps keep the rear from flexing- I'm sure you can imagine what happens when the pinion bends too much in relation to the ring gear... Definitely a good investment, even if you break your 10 bolt down the road someone else will surely buy it from your for 2/3 price. I think new era has them for 120 bucks right now, along with cheap gears and install kits.
Re: 4:10's question
What is a dial indicator? I work at a Gm dealer, and would prob get them put on in there, because i kno a few of the mechanic's would hook it up for me for a small cost
I am still debating between headers or gears...but i think the headers can wait a few months til i get some more money together.
I REALLY NEED TO BEAT THIS STOCK "LS1 T/A VERT AUTO"

Re: 4:10's question
i got motive 4:10's and love them, no probs at all. i have 160k on my car, had them in for around 5k now with no probs. i would do headers first also!!long tubes and a cut out, LOVE IT!!!!!
Re: 4:10's question
On ls1speed.com they have the "performance" motive gears and the genuine Gm gears which say they a quieter. is there any difference??
they also offer package deal on 4:10's w/ master install kit,ta girdle, and speedo calbriator for 530...think that is worth it? or could i be ok with just getting the gears with master install kit and get the speedo fixed some other time

Re: 4:10's question
i got the gears and install kit from that page, and i might have gotten that kit if i didnt send my computer to be reprogrammed by ION.... girdle is a nice option , just up to you if you want to spend all that $... how much will you really use the programmer?
and im pretty sure the physical gears are the same, cut wise. i went with the motive.. they are fine, nice and quiet

Re: 4:10's question
yea, they say the Gm gears are boxed by motive, but i just dont understand why there are two different to choose from...hey i have you on my AIM list..my screenname is bow94z28
Re: 4:10's question
Go with the Motive $.10's. Quieter then most out there as long as their set up right. Problem is this, unless your really good driving a stick car, your gonna blow the tires off that thing with 4.10's while the other guy will be driving away from you. What I would do if your getting the gears is get yourself a set of good drag radials at the same time before you race him. Ease it out of the hole then jump on it. Let him sit and spin while your pulling away. Your mildly modified and with an LT1, it's gonna be kinda hard beating an LS1 even if it's a stock auto. Drop some weight out of the car too before you race. Everything you can take out of the car helps. That includes spare and jack, don't run a full tank of gas, only you in the car while racing ect. It sounds like small stuff but can make the difference between winning and losing.
