Re: 2.73 to 3.73 - Gears

I'm not a fan of Richmond gears because they tend to be a little louder then most other brands.

Here are a few I found for ya:

Scroll down a little to part # 23-875373-X Strange Gears
http://thunderracing.com/catalog/?ac...&vid=4&pcid=67

and if you scroll down a little more they have the install kits, and I suggest part # 85-308TK

Also they have a package deal and heres the link to it.

I hope this helps you out bud.

When you say a little louder... how loud can it be? My exhaust is fairly loud and I can't see it being louder than that. How noticeable would it be?

Well its really on the highway when you'll notice it. If you were to take a small trip you would here it over the exhaust. I had loudmouth and 3.73s before I put my 12 bolt in, and I could here the Richmond gears whine, so I took those out and put in the Strange gears and what a big diffrence. You get what you pay for I guess.

i guess i just got lucky and bought both the gears and they were both the same.
oh and b.t.w. i even installed my own gears. when i bought my installation kit it came with all the shims that could be needed, even for the 3 series carrier and visa versa.
Just curious; What thickness shims did you use to get the correct pinion depth?

That gear set was not made for your 2-series carrier, also I would not buy Richmond gears for street use. Check for a set designed for your carrier. Also the install kit should included the brgs, crush sleeve, shims and pinion end nut for starters.

Re: 2.73 to 3.73 - Gears

Can somebody explain to me what a posi is and what it does? Is it part of the rear end? If I bought an Eaton posi, would it be like buying a new rear end minus the axles? Would it strengthen my rear end to where it would last longer/could take more power?

Re: 2.73 to 3.73 - Gears

If your vehicle is sending power to only one side, it has what's known as an open rear end. For increased traction when you're accelerating hard, you can install a limited-slip differential. (General Motors calls this a Posi or Positraction differential, while Ford calls it Traction-Lok.) A limited-slip sends power to both rear wheels, which improves performance substantially on the street and on a race track. But a limited-slip really is designed for street use, since it literally will slip so that it can send more power to one rear wheel when you're going around a corner. Yes the Eaton Posi will strengthing the rear end but most the time when the rear end goes out its because the ring and pinion, and sometimes the axles.

Oh and if you don't already know, you have POSI in your car now.

Re: 2.73 to 3.73 - Gears

Thanks. It was recommended to me that I upgrade to an Eaton Posi, but I don't plan on having more than 400rwhp on my car. Looks like I will probably just get 2 series carrier gears and an installation kit. Maybe the package from Thunder Racing...
