2.73 to 3.73 - Gears
2.73 to 3.73 - Gears
Can somebody tell me everything that I need to buy in order to install 3.73 ring and pinion? The fluids, gaskets, bolts... everything
EDIT: I'm not installing the new gears. I will have a shop do it.

Re: 2.73 to 3.73 - Gears
Well if your 2:73 gears are stock, the Motive gears will not work. I belive they do not make a 3:73 gear set for a 2-series carrier. Search for other gear mfgs. Also if you find a installer get the info of what you will need in a written estimate & make sure they are aware of the 2-series carrier.
Re: 2.73 to 3.73 - Gears
all you need is a set of gears for a G.M. 10bolt 7.5 rear axle.
it dont matter what kind of gears you get they will all fit.
i had the original 2.73 in my car and swapped them with some 3.42 from a s/10 truck then went to 3:73 from ramchargers.
as long as there from or for a 7.5 10bolt they will fit.

Re: 2.73 to 3.73 - Gears
Don't listen to white/blackss, he doesn't know what he's talking about. A 3 series gear will not fit a 2 series carrier unless you put a spacer on it or have the 3 series gear made for the 2 series carrier. Don't just go buy some random 10 bolt gear.
Re: 2.73 to 3.73 - Gears
Would it be worth it to switch to a 3 series carrier? Would that mean upgrading to an Eaton Posi? Keep in mind I know pretty much nothing about the rear end
All I want to do is change my gears from 2.73 to 3.73 without running into any problems or having a rear end that is unreliable. I'm not putting much power to the wheels and don't really plan on getting over the 400rwhp mark.

Re: 2.73 to 3.73 - Gears
Your lucky im a gear expert and some of these guys don't have a clue what they're talking about.
Your carrier you have now is a 2 series. You don't need to change to a 3 series. When you go to order them, tell them you need 3.73s for a 2 series carrier, and its just a thicker gear they give you for your current 2 series.
Thunder racing and I think Summit racing carries the gears you need and im sure other places do to but I'm just giving examples.
Some places will only install they're products and if I were you, I would shy away from those places. Get the parts and go to a full service shop and tell them what you got and tell them what you want done. Some full service shops do gear installs and some don't, it all depends on the workers, and if they're capable of doing the work.
If you need any other kind of help with gears let me know.

Excellent, thank you very much. So a 2 series isn't 'weaker' than a 3 series? I was kind of under that impression hehe. I take it I have to get an installation kit for a 2 series carrier as well?

nooooo i dont know what im talking about, i only did it in my own car and have no problems at all.
i guess i just got lucky and bought both the gears and they were both the same.
oh and b.t.w. i even installed my own gears. when i bought my installation kit it came with all the shims that could be needed, even for the 3 series carrier and visa versa.
