12 bolt info

i'm looking into a strange 12 bolt for my third gen
i've done alot of searching on this forum and thirdgen.org
and the information is very difficult to find

the options for a stronger bolt in rear end, are basically, strange 12 bolt, moser 12 bolt, or a ford 9in from wherever

the moser says it starts at 1800 with 30 spline axles
and strange is around 2400-2600 with 33 spline axles
and i dont know about the 9inchers

anyway
i hear the moser doesnt use through bolts for the torque arm, and the 4 bolts it uses, could back out
on top of that you have to use a different length drive shaft?

is there any validity to these statements?

its to my understanding that the strange 12 bolt is a bolt in replacement like no other, the torque arm mounting is exactly the same, u can use the same driveshaft from any 3rd or 4th gen f-body
it comes in the 3rd gen width and 4th gen width

is that all correct?

then theres the question of wheel studs, i heard some come with 1/2-20 standard threads instead of the f-body metric m12 x 1.50 (i think)

is there anything else you would need with one of these axles to make them work with your car?

at the very least it will be easier for the next person who does a search on 12 bolts

Re: 12 bolt info

I am also in the market for a new rear, although for an LS1. From what I have gathered from my searches, the Strange is the only "bolt-in" with no modification to anything. The downside to getting a Strange is that they have a reputation for taking forever. A month or two to get it shipped to you seems to be par for the course, and you also have to send them your ?brake caliper mounting plates? or some such thing. I think that's what you have to send them. The Moser apparently needs some grinding on the axle housing to get the torque arm to mount properly, and then the bolts have been reported to back themselves out. It's called Loctite. But I don't have a grinder. So if you want a Strange it's real easy to install you just have to wait a long time to get it. A Moser is harder to install but you can get it quick. The Strange comes with fluid already in it, it doesn't get more "bolt-in" than that. A 9" is supposedly for higher horsepower applications, and I really can't tell you anything about them because I haven't looked at them.

Re: 12 bolt info

I have a Strange and I love it...Do a search under ABA383 and you'll find some of my posts about why I think Strange is the way to go, at least for 4th gen LT1 cars...I think that the same goes for the 3rd gen stuff. Strange is definitely a true bolt in unit, the only drawback being the time it takes to get them which is usually 3-4 weeks, but its worth it...

Re: 12 bolt info

Just installed a Moser 12. I used thread locker on 1/2-13 torque arm bolts. Easy to install the 1/2 bolts instead of the long stock bolts. Had to fab a bracket to hold the brake line. Did not want to drill into the case. Went to a drive shaft with 1350 u-joints. Had to paint it. I purchased the tru-trac and 33 spline axles. It helped having a press to assemble the bearings/ retainer rings. Also, I purchsed the moser alum cover. It clears all of the pan-hard equipment. Nothing different with any after market piece. I broke my 7 1/2. It was $2574.00 with options and $74 shipping.
