Re: 12 bolt

you will spend just as much if not more to install that rear in your car as you would buying the ready made rear from moseur, strange etc.

Re: 12 bolt

You need a rear axle assembly with a mount for the torque arm. Only the 3rd Gen and 4th Gen F-Bodys use the torque arm, and none of them had anything other than the puny 10-bolt (except for some 3rd Gens that got a 9-bolt small ring gear Australian rear). To install a 12-bolt from an earlier GM product, or a 9-inch (or 8.8-inch) from an old Ford product, you need to fab up a torque arm mount. You would also need to size the old rear to the correct width, cut off all the old brackets, and install the 4th Gen mounting brackets for shocks, springs, LCA's and panhard rod. Then there's the issue of driveshaft length, brake mounts, etc.

It can be done if you are a skilled welder and machinist, or have friends that can do it for you.

Let me tell you what my friend the fabricator told me in regards to a question about welding the frame on a car or truck. (The answer would be the same.)

"When they say that you can't weld a frame, they mean that YOU can't weld a frame. I can."

So yeah, you can weld to the axle tubes in the sense that you can hire someone who knows their sh|t to do it for you.

I would suggest that you do NOT "cheap out" on that 12-bolt installation. In fact, I just left Driveline solutions today (with my new 12-bolt) where I know there is a brand new empty Moser 12 bolt axle housing and some brand new 33 spline axles sitting there for the LT1. Give Scott K. a call and ask him to see for how much he'd sell it.
