Question How strong are 12 bolts and what are you running with yours?

Hi. I am looking to buy a 12 bolt for my Camaro. A guy at work told me to just get a 9" because they are stronger, have more options and generally cheaper. I want to stay with Chevy parts but don't want to if it will cost more in the long run.

My car will probably be weighing around 3600 when it is race ready. I will very shortly have 420 to 450 at the wheels. I have an M6 and high rpm launches will happen. I plan on having at least 550 after the head and cam work.

Will a 12 bolt fearlessly get down the track or am I pushing the limits? I am sure that many people have gone way faster than I plan on going with the 12 bolt but reliability is the key here.

There is a gp going on these rears right now and am very interested.

Thanks, Mike

A 12 bolt that is properly setup will hold all that you can throw at it.

>4,000lbs, "only" 733rwhp last year. Ran a best of 10.66 @ 134+mph with an M6. The Moser 12-bolt has been in for 2 years now. The original posi was defective and replaced under warranty. But since then no problems in 8,000 miles of street strip use.

Im with these guys I dont think you can tear up a 12 bolt if it is properly set up. I have went 10.66 @ 132 with M6 and havent had any problems out of it at all.

A 9" takes more power to turn as well. Stick with a 12 bolt, or get a Stange center section for a 9" that uses a 12 bolt gear.

I'm hitting a Strange 12-bolt, heavy duty posi, 4.10's with 800ft-lb/800HP. Thats with two stages of juice and a TH400. No track times yet, but with an M6 and 125-shot (635HP flywheel), it ran 11.1@1@128. I know George Baxter took his Strange up to 925HP before he decided to go for the 9-inch, but he's pushing over 1,300HP at this point.

I don't think I'd opt for the added wieght and reduced mechanical efficiency of the 9-inch unless I was looking at over 1,000HP...... (wishful thinking )

Will this rear work as the "base model"?

Or should I go with the upgraded super strength posi unit?

Thanks, Mike

The guy I mentioned above started with the "standard" Strange posi, and got to about 725HP an an M6 before he burned it up. He replaced it with the "super strength" unit and took it to 925HP with a TH400, no problems.

The LPW aluminum cover and bearing studs used to be "standard" from Strange. But the price on the super strength posi looks like a bargain... I thought I paid more like $300 for the super strength with 3-channel ABS.
