Why can't I get codes to display?

I did a search, but couldn't find this info. I have a '95 Z-28 that had some misc mods done before I got it. I've tried 2 different scan tools, but can't read anything. Any ideas? Do you lose the ability to read codes if someone did any programming in the past? I don't know if it's had any programming performed before I bought it.

I believe what you need is an obd1 scanner with an obd2 type cable on it. Its a bit of an oddity but thats what they had on 95 since it was a changover year.

OBD-I scanner and correct adapter cable should do it.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll try to get an adaptor rigged up.
