Question What to use to program?

Sup guys,

I want to re-program my car for a new thermostat and change the shifts. What are my options, besides the HPP? I have a 2002 LS1 and I think programing through my laptop would be great, but how easy to use are the interfaces and how much do those types cost?

I'm used to my Ford where I have an actual chip that plugs into my PCM and as far as I know, this is not possible with GM, correct?

Thanks guys!!!!!
