tuners?

Hello all, I am rather new the LT1 religion. I am recently converted from the CARB faith. I hear many of you talking about LT1 edit and other 'tuning'.

How much do you stand to gain (HP), with strickly tuning?

How helpful is it with trouble shooting?

How do I get started, what do i need?

THanks

Also, I have a 94 Z28 with 125k miles and sometimes it is hard to start.....I have to crank on it for 8-10 seconds before it fires.

Already changed:

Plugs
Fuel filter
F/P Regulator
MSD Wires

Current Mods:

3" Exhaust, FLowmaster , no cats
K&N Filter
Aftermarket Elbow
Air Foil

I see your in san antonio. There is an fbody group thats meets up on Friday nights around here. I can show you show all the basic stuff you will need. Send me a PM if your intrested. Normally on a stock car you can get 10- 15 hp, but when you start heavily modifying you will need a good tune or you will lose alot of power. It will also let you shut off most codes and the cags.

Yes, LT1 Edit is a waste of money. You pay twice as much for something that will only work on one car. I can program any 94-95 computer with the tunercat i have that i paid $90 for. Plus i can add other type of chipped vechiles for the cost of a $20 definition files. I could program his car with my software since he is in my area. Having that feature with LT1 edit would cost $1500. If want to add another pcm to edit then you have to pay $50 plus a $50 dollar handling fee. For that price i could buy tunercat. That is the main reason i bought tunercat. My roomate had edit so i was thinking of adding a vin to his LT1 edit, but when i found out that it would cost me $100 dollars i said fu(k that. That schmuck want's me to pay $100 to add something to an existing program, when i can buy a version that has no vin restrictions for $10 cheaper. Ls1 edit is a ripoff too. HPtuners is a much better deal that comes with scanning software and flashes the PCM faster and has a pcm recovery tool.

A stock or near stock setup will gain very little hp with tuning. It can still be very useful to be able to change the speedo calibration to accomodate a different tire size, change the fan-on temps, etc. Also, being able to read trouble codes is invaluable. Tunercat is probably the way to go due to the price. LT1_Edit and TC have overalpping but somewhat different functionality and it one really gets into it, it's nice to have both. Edit is prettier and a little easier to use.

For now, I am mainly interested in reading codes. There are a few things going on with my car that i do not like.

1. Can be hard to start (5-8 seconds to fire off)
2. Off Idle stumble
3. Light acceleration pulsing
4. SES light comes on every few days for several minutes

Also, where is the coolant low switch?
