Scanmaster or equiv on '93 Z28

I've just started exploring under the hood of my '93 Z. I got the car from my folks about 6 months ago when my dad got a different car, and I really hadn't cared about cars in the past (I drove a toy(ota) pickup truck previous to that), but now I'm hooked on speed and intrigued with what is lurking under my hood. I'm learning at a pretty quick rate about cars in general and my LT1 in particular thanks to this board, and now I'm looking to get into it a little more.

To make a long story short, I've looked around at all the programmers and diagnostic computers and whatnot, and seen that they all want '94+ cars. The scanmaster says it needs '94+, and I really would have liked one.

I'd like to get something for diagnostic and programming before I get further into this, and I don't want to spend a ton of money on it (being a broke college student sucks). Any ideas/suggestions?

A cheap laptop with freescan maybe? Not sure, I haven't really looked into anything like that for my 93.

SCANNERS:

There is a "93" version of TTS DataMaster, probably the best OBD-I scanning software. Free download, and 20 runs. Then you have to pay a license fee. I believe there is a "93" version of freescan, but not sure if everyone has been successful using it on 93's.

For hardware, you are sort of locked into something like the AutoXray hand held (~$175) or one of the Actron scanners (not the $30 short-the-pins code scanner).

ScanMaster will defiinitely not work on a 93.

PROGRAMMING:

The 93's are unique in the LT1 cars because they have a removable "chip". Hence, you need a programmer and a "burner" specific to the earlier removable chip (e.g. - 3rd Gen) cars.

I'm sort of ignorant when it comes to the interactions between the car and the computer at this point, how hard (or even feasible in the first place) would it be to swap out everything and make it a '94 computer?

Thanks for the info, I'll start looking at it =)

Bad idea, lots of work and believe it or not theres a ton of advantages to the 93 computer over the new

one big one

emulation.
